Perceptions of Care

Clinical-care oriented satisfaction surveys, focused on the interpersonal.

The Perceptions of Care (PoC) surveys are clinical-care oriented, self-report satisfaction rating scales. In developing the PoC surveys, McLean focused on patients' perception of the quality of the interpersonal care they received during hospitalization and outpatient treatment. Use of the PoC survey provides detailed feedback about patients' experience of their treatment during a time when contact with patients is highly focused and time-limited. The survey gives patients the opportunity to anonymously rate care and to recognize clinicians and staff who were particularly helpful in their recovery.

The PoC-IP measures four domains.

  • Interpersonal Aspects of Care
  • Global Evaluation of Care

In addition to the validated 18 items, the PoC-IP includes three additional items on facility cleanliness, food, and group programs. Results of these three items are included in reports but not factored into domain scores.
